What is Summer Strings Camp?


The Oregon East Symphony Summer Strings Camp is a week - long day camp for beginner, intermediate and advanced musicians. This year Summer Camp will follow a slightly different format than in years past.  We will be focusing classes on string instruments only.  Students will receive instruction on technique development, music theory and note-reading, chamber music and small ensemble repertoire.  There will also be large orchestra ensembles for all levels of musicians.  

New This Year - Introduction to Strings for Absolute Beginners - 2:45 - 4:00 pm daily, Cost $20 per student
If you have always wanted to try a violin, cello or viola, and have never had the chance - this is the class for you.  This class is for children of any age - with a parent in attendance or age 7 and up unaccompanied.  It is also for adults who are curious.  Taught by long time fiddle teacher, Peg Willis, this is a chance to just try it out and have some fun.  Our advanced students will also work with you one - on - one for the last half of the session.  To sign up - download and print the form attached at the bottom of this page (absolute Beginner Registration Form) and mai in to the symphony office.


How much does it cost to go to the full camp?
Beginning (1 year and starting to read notes),
Intermediate (2 years and reading notes) and Advanced Students (full day 9am-4 pm) $140 per student for early registration before June 1.   $150 between June 1 and June 20.  Full and Partial Scholarships are available upon request and approval.

Registration fee includes all instruction and materials, T-Shirt, snacks and a hot lunch each day.

Transportation and lodging is the responsibility of out-of-town camper., Home stays for out-of-town students and car pool contacts may be requested and facilitated through the OES Office.

Daily Sessions

Warm ups and Stretches

Let your self bend and twist as you get funky warming up for your string jam sessions.

 

Large Ensembles

Advanced Orchestra - For advanced string players who like to learn.  Join the NEW OES Music Director  Dr. Anthony Spain as he puts you through your paces and stretches your mind with some fun and challenging music.

Intermediate Orchestra - For intermediate string musicians who can read music and have played their instrument for at least 2 years.  Sarah Berglund from Richland will coach you to new heights in both your playing technique and ability to play in a group.

Beginner Orchestra— For beginner string musicians who are learning to read music and have been playing their instruments for less than one year.  Megan Moran and her trusty assistants will help you progress in your skills and have a great time doing it.  You won’t even know you are learning because there will be so much fun.

 

Chamber Music Ensembles

For intermediate and advanced campers. Trios, quartets and quintets.  Learn to develop the skills necessary to play in a small group and direct your own music making with friends.  Final     ensembles will be dependent on available players and faculty. If you would like to work with a pre-existing ensemble group, please indicate on the registration form.

All ensembles are supervised by a faculty member.

 The Magic of Music

How does music work? What is that weird note?  Why do those notes sound great together? Delve into the magic of music with Rappin’ Rhythms, Naughty Notes and Mystical Music Theory

 Other Classes

Learn to Teach Strings Lab—Pedagogy for Advanced Students only at 3.05 pm-4.15 pm.  This class will explore the best techniques for those who want to teach string instruments to less skilled students. Lisa Robertson, Loree Tucker McKenna, Peg Willis

Games and Activity Time For Beginner Students—let off some steam and have a break from your strings, play games, have fun in the sun, be creative or take a nap.  The choice is yours.

 Private Lessons - Violin or Viola, - with Margaret St. Peters. Take advantage of professional one-on-one instruction! This session will allow participants to work more intensely on technique or repertoire. Lesson times will be assigned on the first day of camp and will be done during Games and Activity Time. Please bring music that you are currently studying.

This class is $20 for the week and runs from 2:45—4.00 pm Mon-Thu and 2:00-3:30 on Friday
